Nigeria U23 national team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Sudan in the first leg of their third round clash of the 2020 Olympics qualifiers at the Al-Merrikh Stadium.
Walaa El Din scored the only goal that gave the home team the victory after benefiting from a defensive error in the 45th minute.
The Sudanese team however take a one goal advantage to the second leg billed for Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba next week. Former MFM FC striker Stephen Odey, Blessing Muyiwa and Taiwo Awoniyi all had chances to put Nigeria ahead earlier in the game but they all faltered in front of goal.
Nigeria won the second edition of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Senegal in December 2015, beating Algeria in the final, and both teams then represented Africa at the Rio 2016 Olympics, where the Olympic Eagles won the bronze medals. The third edition of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations will be staged by Egypt 8th – 22nd November this year.
